Kashmir clashes leave nine people dead

Kashmir clashes leave nine people deadAuthorities have said that confrontations between curfew-defying, anti-Indian protesters and security forces in Kashmir Sunday left nine people dead.

Three people were killed when security forces opened fire on protesters in Pampore and Khrew, The Hindustan Times has reported.

The newspaper also said that shortly after in Khrew, a mob encircled a police encampment and torched it. The flames set off an explosion that killed six people and wounded 35.

Chief Minister Omar Abdullah appealed for calm.

He said on Doordarshan's Kasheer channel, "I know young people are angry ... they see no hope. I want to lead them... but only if my government gets a chance to work."

Indian security forces had placed the curfew in effect Sunday in the Kashmir Valley after protests left six people dead.

A total of 32 people have died since a wave of violence began June 11, the Times further added.

Leaders of the anti-Indian movement in the region continued to urge residents to defy the Indian administration, said the pro-Pakistan Kashmir Media Service. (With Inputs from Agencies)
