As Kelly Dessaint narrates his quest in his personal narrative named 'zine Piltdownlad', many of you out there wanting to take on as a San Francisco driver will surely have a detailed and a comprehensive plan to follow. Dessaint asserts that it is not easy becoming a cab driver in San Francisco.
Kelly Dessaint is a former Uber and Lyft driver turned taxi driver in San Francisco. He is also the author of the forthcoming memoir named 'No Fun: How Punk Rock Saved My Life'.
Dessaint narrates how his Twitter and Facebook accounts were flooded with posts that described his ambition to a drive a 'real cab'.
To realize his ambition, Dessaint browsed the list of requirements on the SFMTA website and got conscious of the fact that the route to become a cab driver in San Francisco is an intensive and laborious task.
Fortunately, some of Dessaint's innumerable doubts were cleared by Thomas Canne, a DeSoto driver on Twitter. Further another cab driver, Mansurel provided him the number of the Taxi Driver Institute.
Dessaint narrates how he acted instantaneously and called right away. Here he met Ruach Graffis, the director of the Institute who made Dessaint discern his true credentials. Dessaint who had been boasting of this driving skills and his impeccable knowledge of the City streets, was soon mirrored the reality when he failed miserably on pop quiz taken by Graffis about the streets of Noe Valley.
The tutored lesson plan at the institute included numerous handouts and worksheets that contained SFMTA taxi regulations and traffic laws as well as ADA requirements and tips to navigate the streets efficiently.
The certification from the institute helped Dessaint to attend a daylong class at the SFMTA. The class included lectures and PowerPoint presentations from San Francisco Para transit, the SF Bike Coalition and Lighthouse for the Blind.
Finally upon submission of a copy of his driving record procured from DMV, Dessaint was issued, his 'dream', the temporary A-Card.
