Jordan and Britain to ink nuclear cooperation accordAmman  - Jordan and Britain will on Monday sign an agreement for cooperation in peaceful uses of nuclear energy, Chairman of the Jordan Atomic Energy Commission (JAEC) Khalid Touqan said Wednesday.

The accord will be signed in London by Jordanian Foreign Minister Nasser Judeh and his British counterpart David Miliband on the fringes of an upcoming visit to Britain by King Abdullah II, he added.

The 30-year agreement defines various aspects of nuclear cooperation between Jordan and Britain, including the use of nuclear energy for electricity generation and water desalination as well as for agricultural, industrial and medical uses, Touqan said.

The accord also addresses other issues like nuclear safety, nuclear guarantees, protection of environment and training of cadres, he added.

Jordan so far signed nuclear cooperation accords with France, China, Russia, Canada and South Korea.

Jordan and other Arab countries came to show increasing interest in possession nuclear know-how after Iran went adamantly ahead with its nuclear programme over the past couple of years.(dpa)
