John Urschel Loves Playing Football
John Urschel, a Candian-born mathematician and American footballer, has got his paper titled 'A Cascadic Multigrid Algorithm for Computing the Fiedler Vector' published in the Journal of Computational Mathematics.
In an article for the Player's Tribune, Urschel said that many must be assuming that he would stop playing, but such is not the case. He will continue playing.
"Objectively, I shouldn't (continue playing football), I have a bright career ahead of me in mathematics. ... I have no desire to try to accumulate $10 million in the bank. I drive a used hatchback and live on less than $25k a year", said Urschel.
He said the lifestyle he leads is not because he is frugal and wants to save a lot of money for some big purchases. It is just because the things that he loves the most, like reading math, doing research and playing chess are quite cost effective.
He also shared that he plays football, because he loves the game. Urschel has got his bachelor's and a master's degree in math from Penn State and then he became part of the NFL in 2014. Earlier also, he has his two paper published in math journals and also another paper on the dynamics of asteroid orbits around the sun.
Urschel shared that he becomes a mathematical researcher in his free time. He conducts his research on numerical linear algebra, multigrid method and spectral graph.
Urschel said that when he considering colleges, his mother suggested him to take admission in an Ivy League school, but love for football made him choose Big Ten power Penn State. Later, he became a team captain and won the Campbell Trophy.
Annually, the trophy is given to a football player that has great academic record and also, dominates on the field.
