‘Jodhaa Akbar’ Impresses North America, But Court Issues Notices On Film !
Chandigarh: Censor Board Chairperson Sharmila Tagore and production company UTV have been issued notices by a Chandigarh court on Tuesday, as a criminal complaint was filed by a Rajput outfit and two Hindu groups against the Bollywood film “Jodhaa Akbar”.
In the notices, Civil Judge Parveen Kumar Lal has asked the Censor Board Chairperson and the company to file their replies by April 3.
On Monday, Akhil Bharatiya Rajput Abhivakta Sangh president Arvind Thakur, Punjab Vishwa Hindu Parishad spokesman Vijay Singh Bhardwaj and International Hindu Sanrakshak Parishad General Secretary Shiv Murti Yadav filed a criminal complaint against the film in a district court, for allegedly waging a war against the state under section 121 of IPC and certain other offences.
The complaint was personally against Tagore, producers Ronnie Screwvala and Ashutosh Gowariker and UTV Software Company.
According to the complaint, the film, “Jodhaa Akbar” promotes enemity between different classes and contains words with the intent of hurting religious feelings.
Several groups owing allegiance to Rajput and Hindu outfits had launched agitations in front of cinemas halls and theatres, when the movie was released on February 15.
Meanwhile, “Jodhaa Akbar” has got royal welcome on both sides of the Atlantic. The film earned an estimated $1.3 million in North America and $750,000 in the United Kingdom over the weekend.
Including the business that film has done in the Gulf countries, the Caribbean and Australia, the total earning of the film could reach an awesome $3 million.
In his review on the film published in The New York Times, critic Rachel Saltz wrote, “They may not make'em like they used to in Hollywood, but sometimes in India they still do. Jodhaa Akbar... is filmmaking on the grand scale of Cecil B De Mille (The Ten Commandments), with romance, stirring battles, and enough elephants and gold to sink the Titanic.”
“Jodhaa Akbar” has done impressive business on the US box-office. If it goes on like this, the film could make even more money than Om Shanti Om, which grossed about $3.8 million in North America and holds the record.
