Jail Term For Alistair Pereira Increased

Alistair Pereira
A Mumbai businessman, who ran over seven pavement dwellers while driving drunk last year, was given rigorous imprisonment of three-year by the Bombay High Court which stated “he doesn’t deserve sympathy.”

The HC showed Pereira no pity sentencing him for causing death because of carelessness and grievous injuries.

Importantly the court announced that Pereira was drunk when the accident took place, which the Sessions Court had not found.

While raising Pereira’s sentence from the six months handed down by the lower court, the High Court said, “It was Pereira's civil and legal duty not to drive in a drunken state. He was aware he was driving drunk and at high speed, which could lead to a fatal accident and that Pereira, knew that people were sleeping on the pavement.”

It’s a case that has seen various turns, particularly after the Bombay High Court rapped the prosecution in the strongest terms for a careless examination.

The prosecution had actually failed to prove that Pereira was drunk when his Toyota Corolla massacred the victims.

But on Thursday, the HC set all these doubts to rest, holding Pereira up to public examination, particularly considering the alarming rise in cases of rash and drunk driving in this city.
