IVs provide quick fix for harried Tokyo office workers
Tokyo - Tokyo professionals are getting a quick fix during their lunch breaks and after leaving the office from intravenous drugs that aim to boost beauty and fight fatigue.
The IV drips with collagen-injected, anti-ageing cocktails and glucose-based vitamin supplements only take 10 minutes out of a busy working schedule.
Tenteki 10 is packed on Fridays after work or in the afternoons with workers from surrounding business offices in the high-end Ebisu area of Tokyo.
"We have many clients in business suits coming to refuel their energy when they feel tired," said Makiko Nagahashi of Tenteki 10. Tenteki stands for intravenous drips in Japanese.
Japan's busy bees sometimes take a 10-minute break to run to one of the business's four booths or two VIP relaxation chairs and roll up their sleeves.
"They say it's easy to access without making appointments," the spokeswoman said.
The menu varies from a 50-cubic-centimetre glucose cocktail for 2,000 yen (19 dollars) and a total beauty mix for 3,500 yen to a power-regenerating tube and a detox package for 2,500 yen each.
It could be considered an expensive 10 minutes, but demand for the treatments are growing.
"In the corporate society, where one's talent is highly regarded, many people are experiencing chronic fatigue and stress," Ryuji Yasumura, the clinic's director, told Japan's Yomiuri Shimbun newspaper.
About 40 corporate warriors between the ages of 20 and 60 stick their arms out for the IVs every day. Nagahashi said she sees some women bringing their boyfriends to get a fix.
The most popular treatments since the booth's opening in April is the skin-care package and fatigue-recovering drips, she said. (dpa)
