ISRO to launch GSLV-D3

ISRO to launch GSLV-D3The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) is preparing for the launch of a geosynchronous satellite launch vehicle (GSLV-D3) from launch pad in Sriharikota this month, according to chief K Radhakrishnan.

"Preparations are going on. The final reviews are also taking place. It could be any day from April 15, which is the first available opportunity", said Mr. Radhakrishnan.

The vehicle is the first to be powered by cryogenic engine indigenously developed in the country. The GSLV-D3 will carry the advanced GSAT-4 experimental satellite to space through which the space agency will carry our some researches.

He described the development of complex cryogenic rocket technology in the country as a marvelous endeavor. Earlier the country was suing the technology from Russia in its rockets.

The Cryogenic Upper Stage (CUS) has gone through full flight duration test of 800 seconds successfully and is being used for the first time in GSLV-D3.

The GSAT-4 contains several payloads. It will include a Ka-band transponder system and a small payload for the satellite navigation for augmenting GPS Aided GEO Augmented Navigation, indicated Mr. Radhakrishnan.

The agency has opted for electric propulsion system for the first time against liquid fuel for station-keeping. He said that this would allow the agency to extend the life of satellites.
