ISRO Eyes Sun Mission; To Launch ‘Aditya’ In 2012
After the success of moon mission Chandrayaan-I, the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) sets its eyes on sun.
Mr. Madhavan Nair, ISRO chairman, said that the space organization is keenly pursuing a space mission, Aditya, which will be sent to the sun in 2012 to study the corona or outermost layer of the sun.
Mr. Madhavan also said that Mission Aditya will try to find out how and why flares and winds from the sun upset the communication network, and play havoc with electronics back on earth.
Mission Aditya has got an extra boost after Chandrayaan-1, which was designed to orbit the Moon.
Chandrayaan has prompted India to the choose group of the nations with proficiency in space technology. India is only the second country besides China from the third world to have launched a moon mission successfully.
The achievement of the Aditya Mission will not only answer some of the secrets about or around the sun but also give important hints for ISRO on how to defend its satellites as well as spaceware from being smashed by hot winds and flares exhausted out of the corona.
Aditya is known to be the world's initial space based solar mission projected to study the corona.
The temperature in corona ranges between 800,000 to three million degrees Celsius. Material is ejected from the corona into space comprising several billion tons of matter with speeds ranging to several million miles per hour. Such material intermingles with spacecraft and other artificial materials in its way, inducing electrical currents. They also harm power systems, disturb communications and humiliate advanced navigation systems.
At present, NASA is in the highlight for its Kepler mission. The spacecraft, which is named after famed German astronomer Johannes Kepler (1571-1630), will be the National Aeronautics and Space Administration’s primary mission, which will discover earth-like habitable planets in the galaxy.
It will attempt to answer questions such as how many earth-size planets could be there in the galaxy and how many of them are at just the right distances from their suns to have liquid water on their surfaces.
