Tel Aviv  - An Israeli soldier was killed in the northern Gaza Strip on Tuesday morning during an operation in the area, a military spokesman confirmed.

This was the fifth Israeli soldier to be killed in the last two days and the sixth since the Israeli ground offensive began on Saturday.

The soldier was killed when Palestinian militants opened fire on Israeli troops conducting search operations. (dpa)
