Israeli jets overfly Lebanon

LebanonBeirut  -  A flight of Israeli warplanes Sunday violated Lebanon's airspace over southern Lebanon, a security official said.

"More than four Israeli jets overflew areas near the port city of Tyre," the official said.

It happened amid continuing tension in Lebanon after deadly clashes between supporters of the Western-backed government and the Hezbollah-led opposition.

Israeli jets regularly overfly Lebanon in violation of UN Security Council Resolution 1701. The United Nations has called on Israel to stop doing so.

It says the overflights undermine the credibility of UN peacekeepers stationed in southern Lebanon to observe a fragile ceasefire in the area. (dpa)
