Israel bombs three tunnels under Gaza Strip border

Israel bombs three tunnels under Gaza Strip border Tel Aviv  - Israeli aircraft bombed three tunnels running under the Gaza Strip-Sinai border early Wednesday morning, an Israeli military spokeswoman said.

Secondary explosions were reported after one of the tunnels had been hit, indicating that explosives had been in it.

The tunnels are used to smuggle into the Strip goods made scarce by an Israeli blockade of the Hamas-run salient, but Israel says they are also used as a conduit to bring weapons into the enclave.

The Israeli strike came several hours after militants fired two rockets at southern Israel, bringing to around 130 the number of missiles launched from the Strip after a ceasefire on January 18 ended an fierce Israel offensive against militias in the enclave.

Israel launched the offensive on December 27, in response, it said, to continued militant bombardment on towns and villages adjacent to the Gaza Strip. (dpa)
