Iraq's worst terror attacks since August 2007Berlin  - The wave of bomb blasts in central Baghdad on Wednesday which killed over 100 people were the latest in a long series of terror bombings during the past two years.

Following is a list of some of the most serious attacks since August 2007:

-- August 1, 2007: At least 68 persons are killed in separate explosions in Baghdad. One blast in a market in central Baghdad kills 18, while some 50 were reportedly killed in a second blast when a fuel tanker is blown up in the upper-middle class neighbourhood of Mansur in western Baghdad.

-- August 14, 2007: A series of car bomb blasts across northern Iraq kills 414 people according to regional district authorities. Kurdish sources speak of around 500 dead.

-- February 1, 2008: At least 99 people killed in bombings in busy open-air markets in Baghdad carried out by two female suicide bombers. An Iraqi army spokesman surmises that the two women were mentally unstable and were exploited by Al-Qaeda for the attacks.

-- March 6, 2008: At least 68 people were killed and more than 120 wounded in two bomb blasts in Baghdad's busy Qarada neighbourhood. One bomb went off on the side of a street, the second was carried out minutes later by a suicide bomber.

-- March 17, 2008: A bomb in the Shiite pilgrimage city of Karbala kills 47 people and wounds 75, many of them pilgrims from Iran. Initially a suicide bomber is suspected, but a day later police announce the arrest of six suspects.

-- June 17, 2008: A devastating car bomb in Baghdad kills 63 people and wounds 80 others. The attack took place in the Shiite district of Hurriya in northern Baghdad, and came during the busy rush-hour traffic. All the victims are civilians, including many women and children.

-- July 28, 2008: Four female suicide bombers - three in Baghdad and one in the northern city of Kirkuk - kill a total of 48 people and wound some 165 others. The attacks in Baghdad targeted Shiite pilgrims, killing 26. The attack in Mosul targeted a political demonstration by Kurds, killing 22.

-- December 11, 2008: A suicide attacker blows himself up in a crowded restaurant in Kirkuk, killing 45 other persons and wounding 85. The television network Al-Arabiya reports that the attack possibly targeted a number of clan leaders in the Kirkuk area who were gathering for a meeting with President Jalal Talabani.

-- January 4, 2009: A female suicide bomber kills at least 40 people in Baghdad as Shiite pilgrims are marking the Ashura Festival. The suicide attacker detonated her explosive vest at the entrance to the Shrine of Imam Mussa al-Khadem in the Kadhemiya neighbourhood.

-- February 13, 2009: A female suicide bomber kills 40 people, mainly women and children near the town of Iskanderiya, south of Baghdad. The attacker infiltrated a group of women who with their children were on a pilgrimage to the shrine of Imam Hussein in Karbala. A further 83 people are wounded.

-- March 10, 2009: A suicide bomber kills 41 people and wounds 55 in an attack in a market place in the Abu Ghraib neighbourhood of western Baghdad. The target of the attack is a delegation of ministry and military officials and clan leaders. An Iraqi Army battalion commander as well as several Interior Ministry bodyguards are killed.

-- April 23, 2009: At least 87 people are killed in a wave of attacks. In Diyala province north-west of Baghdad, at least 52 people, mainly Iranian pilgrims, are killed by a suicide bomber in a restaurant. In an attack in Baghdad, at least 34 people are killed by a suicide bomber.

-- April 24, 2009: Two suicide attackers killed 60 people making their way to a Shiite shrine in Baghdad.

-- April 29, 2009: A total of 50 people are killed by five car bombs in various parts of Baghdad and its suburbes. The biggest tally is 43 killed by three car bombs in the eastern suburb Sadr City. -- June 20, 2009: Over 70 people are killed by a truck bomb attack near a Shiite mosque in the town of Tasa, south of the northern city of Kirkuk. Over 200 people are injured.

-- June 24, 2009: At least 74 people are killed, and 150 wounded, in by a bomb in Baghdad. The attack occurred in a busy market square in the chiefly Shiite district of Sadr City.

-- July 7, 2009: More than 70 civilians are killed in a wave of attacks within a period of a few hours around Iraq. The targets are residential areas chiefly inhabited by Shiites and the Shabak religious minority. Among others, 35 people are killed by two suicide bombers in Tel Afar, 450 kilometres north of Baghdad.

-- August 10, 2009: A series of bomb attacks, chiefly targeting Shiites, claims at least 55 lives. Thirty people are killed by two truck bombs in a village east of Mosul, while in Baghdad, 23 people are killed and 130 injured by two car bombs. In Kirkuk, two Sunni militias are killed by an explosive device.

-- August 19, 2009: At least 100 people are killed and 552 injured in =a stunning and coordinated wave of attacks in central Baghdad. Eyewitnesses say some 10 explosions rocked the city. (dpa)
