Inzamam rules out immediate retirement plans
Lahore, Oct 4 : Former Pakistan captain Inzamam ul-Haq has announced that he has ‘no immediate plans to retire from Test cricket’.
Inzamam confirmed that he had informed the Pakistani selectors about his availability for the second Test.
"I am fully fit and have no plans to retire. I don’t want to leave the game. I want to play as long as I am fit and can perform," the Daily Times quoted him, as saying.
The national electronic media reported on Tuesday that Inzamam would retire from Test cricket after playing the second Test against South Africa starting from October 8.
Meanwhile, the PCB would announce a decision on Inzamam’s future in the next few days in the ‘larger interest of the game’, a spokesman of the board said.
The spokesman denied media reports that the PCB and Inzamam had struck a deal for a golden handshake of Rs 10 million to retire from Test cricket.
Earlier, Inzamam, who has played 119 Tests and 378 one-day internationals, was asked by chief selector Salahuddin Ahmad about his availability for the first Test, but he turned down the invitation without any explanation or reason.
Inzamam quit one-day internationals and stepped down from the captaincy after team’s early exit from the World Cup in the West Indies in March this year.
There were also reports in the media that Inzamam had held a meeting with PCB chairman Nasim Ashraf in which it was decided that Inzamam would be paid Rs 10 million for his services to Pakistan cricket.
Inzamam said that there is no harm in playing for the ICL, but he would always give preference to his country.
"Pakistan has given me all the fame and money. I will give preference to Pakistan if there is a clash of dates between the ICL and the national duty," he concluded. (With inputs from ANI)
