Internet speeds increased 25 percent previous year
According to a new study by Web and analytics company, Akamai, the internet speeds have grown 25 per cent on average during the previous year.
The average speeds were recorded at 2.6 Megabits per second (Mbps). After filtering the slower connections, South Korea was ranked number one in the world with an average speed of 15.7 Mbps followed by Japan at 10.9 Mbps. The average speed in the US was recorded at 6.7 Mbps and the country ranked 12th in the list.
Hong Kong topped the list of countries with fastest peak Internet connection speeds with an average speed of 49.3 Mbps with South Korea recording 47.8 Mbps. The company said in its The State of the Internet, 1st Quarter 2012 report that the global average connection speed rose 14 per cent in the first three months of 2012.
The company also reported that "Long term trends were once again very positive, reflecting a continuing shift toward higher speed connectivity. All of the top 10 countries, as well as the United States, experienced positive year-over-year changes in average connection speeds."
The company said that the average speeds have been increasing across the world specially in countries with developing infrastructure.
