Inmates' illegal possessions: Govt to clean up state jails
The state government will inspect the jails for illegal possessions in the custody of inmates serving their sentence. Jails minister Ram Kishore Saini said the inspections of the jails would be carried out and illegal possessions like cellphones and other objects will be seized.
"It is my ministry now and my priority is to see that the administration of jails becomes transparent and clean," Saini told reporters in Jaipur
He said the first initiative by the department would be to find out how the inmates could get cellphones and other possession which they are barred from carrying or possessing while serving their term. The minister said that possibility of jammers around the cells inside the major premises can be explored but said any feasibility will have to be studied first before implementation.
He was skeptical of rampant urbanisation and construction activity around jails where the criminals are being lodged. Saini said nothing can be done about the buildings that have come up in the vicinity of the jails. But the department will see if there can be a way to pursue the government from disallowing further urbanisation around jails to secure them.
