Influenza is Not Severe This Season
This season, most of the areas have experienced significantly less number of flu cases. However still health officials recommend people to get vaccinate. Symptoms of flu include fever, chills, cough, sore throat, runny or stuffy nose, muscle or body aches, headaches and fatigue. In some younger patients, vomiting and diarrhea can also be noticed.
In Greenwich, only a few people have been hospitalized for influenza this season, as per reports. “We had a very mild season in Greenwich; it’s been under 20 cases we’ve seen all season. During a bad season, we’re used to getting 10 a day,” said Dr. James Sabetta, who heads the Infectious Diseases Department at Greenwich Hospital.
According to Sabetta, there are several reasons for causing this variation in the number in flu cases from season to season. A possible cause could be popularity of vaccination among people. It may be possible that vaccine is working really well.
Santiago has also experienced less number of cases of influenza in a season when number is supposed to be great. Emergency room visits taken for flu like symptoms also fell in the region. The sixth death due to flu related illness has been reported, which is significantly less than 66 deaths reported last year.
In February 2012-13, emergency departments have noted 11% of the influenza rate, while during same month this year, the figure accounted for only 6%.
Five of the six people who died of influenza in Santiago County were older than 80 years. The most recent victim was 83-year-old man from San Diego who died on February 5. Before that, a 62-year-old man from unincorporated San Diego County died on January 25.
