India successfully tests BrahMos from underwater platformDefence scientists have successfully test fired the BrahMos supersonic cruise missile launched from an underwater platform in the Bay of Bengal.

The scientists tested the new version of the supersonic cruise missile that can be launched from submarines under water. BrahMos Chief Executive Officer (CEO) A Sivathanu Pillai said that the submarine-launched version of BrahMos was successfully test fired from an underwater pontoon in the Bay of Bengal.

"BrahMos missile is fully ready for fitment in submarines in vertical launch configuration which will make the platform one of the most powerful weapon platforms in the world," Pillai said.

He described the performance of the supersonic cruise missile during the test as perfect. Officials said that the missile has a range of 290 km and it travelled its complete range during the first test firing of a supersonic cruise missile from an underwater platform. Defence experts have said that the India has become the first country in the world now to possess such a capability.

The other versions of the supersonic cruise missile that can be launched from ships and form the ground were earlier tested successfully and are already in service with the Indian Army and the Navy.
