India plans on track: GM MD

General MotorsGeneral Motors India has launched the LPG version of its one of the best selling model, Chevrolet Spark in India, priced at Rs 3.52 lakh (ex-showroom Delhi).

While speaking on this, Karl Slym (GM India President and Managing Director) said, "We plan to continue to introduce the variance of the Spark that targets different groups of customers. This will enable us to achieve our goal of becoming a market leader in India by giving our customers the vehicles that they want, when they want them."

Moreover, the company has also decided to launch luxury sedan Chevrolet Cruze by September this year, and a mini car by the end of 2009.

With an average of 13.8 km, this model is priced Rs 21,000 more than the regular one and is fitted with 'sequential injection-type' LPG kit, he said adding that the technology used is far superior to the venture type kit available in the market.

Slym also said that India operations will remain unaffected, and the company will operate normally despite the automaker's parent filing for bankruptcy protection.

Even though the automobile industry is growing 2 % last year, the company has recorded 10% growth.

"The bankruptcy filing was only for the US operations and our business here will continue as usual. All employees, suppliers and customers are partners of the company," added Slym.

The US major had earlier announced that it will made an investment of $ 200 million for the construction of an engine transmission plant of two lakh units per annum capacity at Talegaon.

It should be noted here that General Motors had recently filed for a government-assisted Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection. The company which manufactures cars and trucks in more than 30 countries is now planning to re-emerge as a smaller and less debt-burdened organization.
