India, Australia to fight for third place in ICC Women’s World Cup
Sydney, Mar 19 : India on Thursday defeated West Indies by eight wickets, but the result was not good enough to ensure them a place in Sunday’s final of the ICC Women’s World Cup. India will now face Australia on Saturday to determine the third and fourth places.
For making to the final, India needed to beat the West Indies and hoped that New Zealand would go down to Pakistan and England beat Australia in their respective Super Six matches.
Australia, however, ruined the Indian party by thrashing England in their World Cup Super Six match.
West Indies skipper Merissa Aguilleira won the toss and decided to bat first.
Her decision backfired when Indian spinner Priyanka Roy (4/14) fired into the West Indian batting order.
West Indies could manage to score only 83 runs, with five of their batters making ducks.
Chasing a target of 84, Indian opener Sulakshana Naik (39 0ff 48 balls) and in-form Mithali Raj (34 off 41 balls) ensured a victory for the team. (ANI)
