Imposing NSA on Varun, a misuse of a serious law: Maneka Gandhi

Imposing NSA on Varun, a misuse of a serious law: Maneka GandhiBareilly (Uttar Pradesh), Mar 30 : Independent MP Maneka Gandhi on Monday defended her son Varun Gandhi and said that invoking the National Security Act (NSA) for inciting violence by making inflammatory anti-Muslim remarks, is a travesty of justice.

She termed the imposition of the NSA a "misuse of a serious law".

Talking to reporters in Bareilly after meeting Varun, who was in police custody, Maneka Gandhi said: "What has happened with Varun is injustice to him and injustice to the country because misuse of such a serious law is, I think, very dangerous for the country. Let us see what happens now."

Gandhi accused the Uttar Pradesh administration of following the orders of a higher authority.

She claimed that Varun had surrendered peacefully on Saturday after the Pilibhit court had sent him to jail.

"He surrendered at 1:25 p. m., but the case was filed only at 3 p. m. (on Saturday). Cases were filed not only against him, but also against those people who were not present there. I feel the administration was put under pressure," said Gandhi.

The court order to take custody of Varun came shortly after he said he was ready to go to jail.

Gandhi maintains his innocence and claims that the CD containing his speech has been tampered with. (ANI)
