Dubai, May 9 : Eminent Indian painter Maqbool Fida Husain has said that he still unsure about ending his self-imposed exile in spite of getting relief from the Delhi High Court in connection with three petitions filed against him for paintings that allegedly denigrated Hindu goddesses.

Voicing apprehension over the three remaining cases pending against him, Husain said there was no need for him to rejoice at this stage in his life.

He said that at 92, he had been forced to move out of India and live in Dubai, London and Qatar since 2006, all because a certain section of society back home had labelled his paintings as obscene.

Husain, who fled after his paintings of Bharat Mata as well as of Hindu Gods earned him the ire of right wing groups like the Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) and Bajrang Dal, said that he welcomed the court's decision but at the same time was apprehensive about the pending cases.

When asked if the court judgment was enough to persuade him to return back to India, he refused to comment.

Seven cases were registered against Husain in the 1990s. The proceedings against the painter were quashed on Thursday in complaints filed in Panderpur (Maharastra), Rajkot (Gujarat) and Indore and Bhopal (Madhya Pradesh) alleging that his paintings were obscene and had hurt public sentiments.

"A painter at 90 deserves to be in his home--painting his canvas," the judge said on Thursday while quashing the proceedings in the cases against Husain. (ANI)
