Hundreds of people participate in 20th Annual Buddy Walk

On Sunday, 20th Annual Buddy Walk was organized at World’s Fair Park in which hundreds participated. The walk event aims to raise awareness and acceptance to those who live with Down syndrome. A lot of activities were there in the event, including bounce houses for children, entertainment from the Sunshine Ambassadors and variety of things to eat.

Executive Director Kelly Johnson said, “We’re just basically out here to celebrate all of our friends with Down syndrome and celebrate their different abilities we don’t like to focus on the fact of a disability. Talk about the great things that they do and spend the day celebrating them”.

Melanie Fleury, who has taken part for the second time in the Buddy Walk, shared views that they enjoyed a lot in the event. Fleury said the event provides an opportunity to community to step forth and help children.

Johnson affirmed that they have also set a fundraising goal of $75,000 and are hoping to achieve the goal by the end of this year. Major portion of the raised amount will be utilized locally for education, support programs and scholarships for people having Down syndrome.

People present at the event promoted the message of accepting all people with Down syndrome. After the end of the walk, around 150 attendees with the syndrome were presented with a medal by Ronald McDonald.
