HP to offer webOS source code under open source license Computing giant, Hewlett-Packard is planning to offer its webOS source code under an open-source license in September 2012, a move aimed at infusing new life into the platform.

HP is also planning to release the new version 2.0 of Enyo webOS developer tool as part of its overhaul of the platform. The new tool will allow developers to create applications that are supported on a wide range of mobile devise and desktop internet browsers.

The company is planning to release Enyo 2.1 in April and Enyo 2.2 in July this year. The Open webOS Beta is expected to be launched in August and Open webOS 1.0 will be available from September, according to the company.

The webOS source code will be offered under the Apache License, Version 2.0. HP had first announced its intention to make webOS an open-source project in December 2011. The company had also pointed out that it would act as an investor to the platform and will aim at avoiding fragmentation of the code.

HP had acquired the code as part of a $1.2 billion acquisition of Palm in 2010. The company had launched a tablet powered by the platform. However, CEO Leo Apotheker decided to scrap the project with six months of is launch due to meager sales in the markets as the company struggled to compete against Apple's iPad and a host of other devices powered by Google's Android platform.

Apotheker's successor, Meg Whitman finally announced the company's decision to make it open source instead of he option to sell it or simply scrap the code altogether. The code in its open source version might be able to attract new users and developers due to the backing of HP.
