Howard spoils Mourning's night, Magic beat Heat 101-95

Howard spoils Mourning's night, Magic beat Heat 101-95Los Angeles  - On a special night immortalizing Alonzo Mourning, the Miami Heat was victimized by Dwight Howard.

Howard scored 22 points and grabbed 18 rebounds - to pass legendary Wilt Chamberlain as the youngest (23 years, 112 days) to pull down 5,000 boards - and the Orlando Magic beat the Heat 101-95 on Monday night.

Howard and the Magic spoiled an emotionally touching and tearful celebration for Mourning, who became the first Heat player to have his number retired.

The unusually long 43-minute halftime ceremony included tributes by former Georgetown coach John Thompson, college teammate Dikembe Mutombo mentor later turned rival Patrick Ewing, Heat president Pat Riley and a letter from President Barack Obama.

"I wanted to let you know how proud we all are of your extraordinary career, but also the way you have given back to the community all these years," Obama wrote. "You have been, and will continue to be, a great leader. God bless you and your family."

Mourning joined the Heat in 1995, and in 2000 the seven-time All- Star centre was diagnosed with kidney disease. Doctors doubted he would ever play again, but with his second cousin donating a kidney, "Zo" had the transplant and returned to win the elusive NBA championship ring when Miami beat Dallas in 2006.

"Just eight short years ago, I didn't envision this moment happening," the teary-eyed Mourning told the sold-out crowd moments after watching his No. 33 jersey bearing his name being hoisted to the rafters at the American Airlines Arena.

"I'm truly humbled to be the first in the 21 years of the franchise history to have his number retired. This is probably one of the greatest moments of my life and I'm honoured to be here this evening."

Howard wandered out of the locker room to watch the ceremony for two reasons.

"This night is for Alonzo, but I wanted to see if he was going to cry, that's what we were talking about before the game," Orlando's All-Star centre said. "He had a lot of tears, but it's all good.

"I'm really happy for him. He's led the way for a lot of big men and I appreciate everything he's done for basketball."

Aware he had lost the bet, Mourning said, "Y'all can go and collect your money."

Rashard Lewis scored 21 points, and Turkish native Hedo Turkoglu added 16 for Orlando (55-18), winners of six straight to jump percentage points ahead of defending NBA Champion Boston for the second seed in the Eastern Conference playoff chase behind Cleveland.

League top scorer Dwyane Wade had 42 points for the Heat (39-35), which remains fifth in the East, despite losing to its Florida rivals for the 12th time in the last 13 games of the lopsided series.

"That was a heck of a ceremony, nobody deserved it more than Alonzo," Heat coach Erik Spoelstra said. "It was great to finally see one of ours from the Miami Heat family have his jersey go up there. It was a special night."

With the game knotted at 92, Courtney Lee skipped a pass to Lewis, who drained the go-ahead three-pointer from the left corner with 1:32 left. Turkoglu found Howard inside for a layup, making it 97-92 with 50 seconds remaining.

Wade made three free throws to draw the Heat within 97-95 with 17 ticks left. However, Orlando's J. J. Redick sank all four of his tosses on two trips to the stripe to seal the victory.

"Of course you want to win on night of celebration," Wade said. "We could have pulled this one out. It went down to the very end, we were right there, but it didn't go our way tonight." (dpa)
