Hmong Americans seek dismissal of plotting to overthrow Laotian government case

Hmong Americans seek dismissal of plotting to overthrow Laotian government caseCourt records have indicated that Hmong Americans accused of plotting to overthrow the Laotian government seek dismissal of the case in California.

The Sacramento Bee reported on Thursday that the 11 defendants allege in a Sacramento federal court lawsuit that an undercover firearms agent acted unconstitutionally in playing mind games with them.

The agent exploited their frustration and outrage at the Laotian government's alleged policy of genocide against the Hmong, coerced them to join what was represented as a U. S. government-backed military offensive against Laos, and that in a sting operation between January and June 2007, an agent posed as a weapons salesman to get defendants to buy weapons for the cause, the defendants have said.

Many Hmong Americans are angry that the United States has done nothing to help Hmong in Laos, even though reports by credible human-rights organizations indicate the Hmong are tortured and otherwise victimized by the communist government in Laos.

The law enforcement's conduct violated due process in that the crime was fabricated to secure convictions of the Hmong Americans, and physical and mental coercion was used to get them to commit the crime, say defendants. (With Inputs from Agencies)
