Higher Intake of Iced Tea Puts Arkansas Man in Trouble
A man from Arkansas was brought to the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences as he experienced nausea, weakness, fatigue and body aches. The findings were presented in New England Journal of Medicine.
After going through a series of tests researchers discovered that the 56-year-old man’s urine has high levels of calcium oxalate crystals which turned into kidney stones.
The man said that he has never experienced anything like this before and his family also had no history of getting diagnosed with kidney stones.
After a series of question and answer with experts the man finally admitted that he has a bizarre daily intake of 16 250ml glasses (approximately 8 ounces) of iced tea which is equals to over four liters or one gallon.
The doctors blamed the extreme intake of iced tea done by the man. Black iced tea is known to have high levels of oxalate, a type of chemical that yields kidney stones and may even give rise to kidney failure if ingested in excessive doses daily, said doctors.
University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences Dr. Umbar Ghaffar stated that the unwarranted daily intake of the black iced tea was the only reasonable explanation for the man’s condition.
He said the man’s pair of kidneys was congested with the chemical oxalate and this lead to severe inflammation.
The man had to undergo kidney dialysis because too much damage has been inflicted on his kidneys. The doctors said that there is a likelihood that he is going to spend the remaining of his life on dialysis.
Talking to the man during his treatment, doctors found that his daily black ice tea consumption was about 3 to 10 times greater than the average intake by a normal person.
As per earlier conducted studies, adults in US intake from nearly 10 to 11 cups of liquid including water, coffee and other beverages daily.
