High-Dose Oxygen can Help Stimulate Immune System against Cancer

Researchers have been trying to use oxygen against cancer. A team of researchers have come one step closer in the experiment, which could lead to breakthrough treatment for cancer by boosting the immune sysmte.

As per the novel research, high-dose oxygen would be beneficial in stimulating immune system against cancer. The research, which was carried out on mice, has paved the way for the theory.

Susanna Greer, Director of clinical research and immunology for the American Cancer Society, was of the view that this is a simple approach, which can bring significant improvements and could make cancer therapies better.

Study's lead researcher Michail Sitkovsky of Northeastern University in Boston was of the view, "I was looking to solve the problem of existence of tumors and anti-tumor killer cells in the same patient. Since the root of all problems is the lack of oxygen in tumors, a simple solution is to give tumors more oxygen".

One of the properties of tumor is that it can live without oxygen, a state known as hypoxic environment. Before this study was carried out, many ways were tried to use oxygen against cancer, but most of them have failed.

The American Cancer Society said that the available evidence does not support the claims that using oxygen-releasing chemicals into a person's body is effective in cancer treatment. There are oxygen treatments that can prove dangerous. The novel approach is said to be non-toxic, 60% oxygen mix.

The new approach is said to have taken 30 years to develop. It is considered to significantly increase the survival rate of patients with cancer, which takes lives of around 8 million people each year.

Sitkovsky said that supplemental oxygen found that supplemental oxygen can stop the hypoxia. It in return can improve cancer immunotherapy.
