Healthy Lifestyle could help control dementia

According to a new study, lifestyle factors could assist in controlling dementia in people who are vulnerable to it. Researchers said the reason behind this is not known.

The new study has been published in medical journal The Lancet Neurology. According to the researchers, dementia cases may be decreasing due to improved education and living conditions in addition to better treatment of vascular diseases and their prevention.

According to senior researcher Prof Carol Brayne from the Institute of Public Health at Cambridge University, the study has suggested a logical reason behind decrease in dementia. Brayne said the reason is that people are more aware about their health today that they were some years ago.

As per Martin Prince, professor of epidemiological psychiatry at King’s College London, he may have reached more guarded conclusions from the proof in the study as the numbers of elderly are growing gradually. According to Prince, “Psychologists are at the forefront of improving care and service provision and offer high-quality support for people living with dementia and their families”.

Many experts assumed that rates of dementia would increase. It predicted that so far, approximately 820,000 Britons would have suffered from it. Data from a number of studies of dementia prevalence was reviewed by researchers. The disease prevalence was observed in Spain, England, Sweden, and the Netherlands.
