Health Clinic gave Expired Shots and Wrong Vaccines to at least 5 Children
During an annual state compliance audit for the Shots for Tots program, authorities concerned have found that a health clinic for uninsured has given expired shots and wrong vaccines to five children. Also, the health clinic had wrongly stored vaccines worth $20,000 when the refrigerator stopped working and had to be thrown away.
The Salem County has been running the program. Officials said that for now, the program has been closed and they are now investigating how and why the problem took place. Two full-time nurses who were managing the clinic have resigned from the county Health Department.
For now, children who were given wrong vaccination have not suffered any side effect. However then also, the county has said that it will pay for the children’s medical monitoring costs. The five children visited the clinic between October 2014 and June 2015.
Two children were injected with expired vaccines and the third one, a two-year-old body, was given an overdose of Gardasil. It is a vaccine to prevent cervical cancer and is given to teenagers. The one who was given this vaccine was just two years and may suffer from neurological effects.
Michael Mulligan of the Salem County Counsel said, “Certainly the child is going to be in our prayers and I hope your viewers put the child in their prayers in the context of passing this test”.
It has also been found that a one-year-old was given flu mist dose. The dose is not meant to be given to children below two years as it can lead to breathing problems.
