Green Lineup updated to 2TB by Western Digital
With the aim to attract more customers, Western Digital has made announcement regarding its novel drive. The new product has a 2 Terabyte Caviar Green hard drive with
32 MB of cache.
The seek time for the drive is 8.9ms. Apparently, it operates between 7200 or 5400 RPM depending upon the load, which saves power.
The latest drive is capable in achieving this, since there have been advancements in Perpendicular Magnetic Recording (PMR), using a four platter design, with 500 MB per platter. It is also good to know that power consumption is also reduced readily since it has fewer platters.
Earlier, the precious capacity champion by WDC was just 1TB, so it is being expected that this new flagship would be extensively used in DVRs and archival system. The distributors will receive the model number dubbed as WD20EADS this week itself.
Furthermore, other than launching the 2TB model, it has also been learnt that Western Digital is unveiling a 1.5TB model (WD15EADS) so that it could accompany its revised 1TB model (WD10EADS). 32MB of cache, which helps to increase access speed to commonly accessed data, is featured in both of them.
Mark Geenen, President of Trend Focus remarked, "While some in the industry wondered if the end consumer would buy a 1 TB drive, already some 10 percent of 3.5-inch hard drive sales are at the 1 TB level or higher, serving demand from video applications and expanding consumer media libraries."
