Graduates' have their 'destiny' in their hands, says Michelle Obama
Speaking at Anacostia High School's commencement in Washington, First lady Michelle Obama told graduates their destiny is in their hands.
According to the reports of her office, the first lady spoke at the commencement ceremony for the all-black high school held at DAR Constitution Hall.
It was also reported that referring to 19th century icon Frederick Douglass, she spoke about the "American spirit," hard work paying off, finishing what was started, and "persevering through thick and thin."
The first lady also brought up "strong churches" as being at "the heart and soul of the community" but also stated "no one's in control of your destiny but you."
The first lady said, "If you want your own destinies and you want to control those destinies tomorrow, you've got to start practicing who you want to be today, because if you're afraid to step beyond your comfort zone today and reach for the things you want today, you'll always be afraid. If you're afraid to speak up and ask for what you need today, you will always be afraid."
Recognizing not all graduates at the high school were going to college, she suggested some learn a trade or go to community college. (With Inputs from Agencies)
