Govt May Lift Ban On Non-Basmati Rice Exports

The union government is expected to allow export of non-basmati rice. The ban on Govt May Lift Ban On Non-Basmati Rice Exports non-basmati rice was temporarily imposed in April 2008 to maintain proper supply of rice in the domestic market and to ease inflationary pressure. The union finance minister, P Chidambaram hinted the early removal of ban from non basmati rice. He was here to inaugurate new facility of rice exporting firm, Tilda Riceland. 

India is the third largest exporter of rice in the world. Thailand and Vietnam occupy the first and second places respectively. The country has witnessed a record procurement of paddy during 2007-08 season ending September. The government has already allowed export of Pusa 1121 variety of rice. 

The finance minister said that the world is facing three types of crisis namely fuel, food and financial. This global crisis has natural impact on the Indian economy. The government is taking various steps to ensure above three percent growth in the agriculture sector. The government would lift all restriction that is not in the favor of farmers, traders, millers, exporters and consumers.
