A documented report from the Cabinet Office Minister, Angela Smith states that there is no rule that states that the government departments will have to use Microsoft's Internet Explorer only. This means that other Internet browsers can now be allowed within the government office.

The statement comes despite the fact that IE browser is the most commonly used browser within Whitehall.

Smith further stated that the Government policy regarding installation and use of web browsers is that all decisions must be in line with value-for-money requirements.

Furthermore, considering the security issues related to IE6 browser, it was stated by the Labour MP that it was a matter of disappointment that the departments were only using IE6 and nothing else.

Many of the sectors like NHS, Home Office, Children, Schools and Families have planned to upgrade themselves to IE7. But Defence Ministry is still sticking to its position and will continue with IE6.
