You will shortly be able to enjoy stargazing on your mobile phones. Well, Google is set to roll out sky maps for mobile phones. The internet search giant has reportedly developed a new mobile application called "Star Droid" that will help to identify stars and planets right on your mobile screens.

Google’s new software for stargazers – Star Droid is new Google Earth application. The Star Droid uses GPS (Global Positioning System) mapping systems to identify distant stars and planets.

With the Star Droid, the stargazing enthusiasts will be able to know their constellations from their planets just by pointing their phones up. The mobile app will help the users to identify the differences between Mercury and Mars just by directing their camera-phones at the night sky and pressing a button.

The Star Droid will include the existing space maps to help the app work according to a user’s location. The mobile app will identify stars and planets by giving name tags to stars and planets, which will be visible through phone's viewfinder. The mobile app is also expected to identify the distances of a star from Earth and its position within a constellation.

The Star Droid is Google’s effort to enhance its mapping technology, which includes Google Sky, Google Earth and Google Street View. Google could officially release “Star Droid” this week. However, Google has declined to comment on Star Droid. Google spokeswoman has said, "There are lots of great applications being produced all the time, so you will just have to watch this space.”
