Google introduces ‘Search Autocomplete’ feature to Gmail

Google introduces ‘Search Autocomplete’ feature to GmailJust a few days after introducing Indic Language transliteration feature, supporting five Indian languages, to Gmail, Google has announced that it has released new add-on feature, “Search Autocomplete” for Gmail.

Gmail’s new feature, Search Autocomplete improves the search tool of Google’s email service. It offers suggestions for contacts and search modifiers. It suggests possible terms after a user writes a few letters into the search bar. When a user searches for a message from a specific person, the new feature automatically starts suggesting what a user is possibly searching for. The new feature simply intensifies and enhances searches, offering possible suggestions for searches.

On a corporate blog April 2, Google Software Engineer Ibrahim Bokharouss wrote, "One of the most popular searches in Gmail is for names or e-mail addresses, so the first kind of suggestions you'll see are contacts. With this new Labs feature you can just type a couple letters and select the desired contact from the drop-down list. Easy and quick as that."

Additionally, Search Autocomplete offers advanced search operators to the Gmail users, providing a higher magnitude of specificity that doesn’t require inserting traditional search query terminology. For instance; if a user searches for attachments or photos in Gmail, by writing the sender’s name and the term “attachment” or "photos" into the search bar, the Search Autocomplete will display a drop-down option list saying "has photos" or "has attachments”.

While, Yahoo and Microsoft have been advancing the search features in their e-mail services, Google has also been releasing new features for Gmail. Google, a few days ago, announced support for five Indian languages on Gmail and announced that Gmail will be available in 49 languages. Gmail has been becoming more and more competitive against Yahoo’s, Microsoft’s, and other email services.
