Google files patent-infringement suit against BT
More than a year after bigwig British telecom group BT alleged that Google had violated its intellectual property, Google hit back at BT, by filing patent-infringement lawsuits against the company in the US and the UK, on Wednesday.
In its recently-filed lawsuit against BT, Google has asserted that the British telecom group had infringed on four of its patents related to mobile technology. As per Google, the infringements by BT essentially covered technology such as networking and making phone calls over the Internet.
When Google was sued by BT in 2011, the British company accused Google of violating six of its mobile-technology patents. According to the allegations leveled by BT in its lawsuit, which is still pending in a federal court in Delaware, Google had allegedly infringed BT's mobile patents through a number of devices, including the company's popular Android mobile platform, the Gmail email service, and Google Maps.
Meanwhile, with regard to Google's recent filing of the lawsuit against BT, Google spokeswoman Niki Fenwick said that the company tries to avoid lawsuits, and it always takes the legal route as the "last resort;" and added alongside: "But BT has brought several meritless patent claims against Google and our customers - and they've also been arming patent trolls."
