Google to acquire Meebo for $100 millionInternet giant, Google is planning to acquire a Silicon Valley startup, Meebo Inc under a deal valued at about $100 million.

The acquisition will further enhance the company’s Google Plus social platform. The company first offered a system to connect people by instant message and later expanded to develop other communication features. It has a user base of about 100 million internet users in the US. The two companies have not announced the financial details for the deal, but an earlier report had suggested the figure of $100 million for the acquisition.

“We are always looking for better ways to help users share content and connect with others across the Web, just as they do in real life. With the Meebo team's expertise in social publisher tools, we believe they will be a great fit with the Google Plus team,” Google said in a statement.

Meebo, which was founded in 2005, is also based in Mountain View, California like Google. The company announced the acquisition deal on its blog on Monday. Meebo tools allow websites to share pages on Twitter Inc. and Facebook and lets advertisers promote products in different ways online.

Google Plus has attracted more than 170 million users since its debut about a year ago and the company is aiming to attract more users to compete with Facebook.
