The Golden Compass review
Star Cast: Nicole Kidman, Daniel Craig, Dakota Blue Richards, Ben Walker, Eva Green, Jim Carter, Sam Elliot
Director: Chris Weitz
Chris Weitz has narrated every scene from Philip Pullman’s first book in the Northern Lights trilogy. ‘The Golden Compass’ is a laid out beautifully. It is like a deep dark fantasy involving quasi-philosophical magic about free will against tyranny. The film has many characters.
The film moves around Lyra Belacqua (Dakota Blue Richards), a young orphan girl, who lives in a world where each person carries with him/her the physical manifestation of soul, called daemons.
Lord Asriel (Daniel Craig) entrusts her with the last surviving Alethiometer (Golden Compass), a device that tells the truth.
When children start disappearing, Lyra escapes from Mrs. Coulthard’s (Nicole Kidman) clutches to rescue the friend Roger and many other children kidnapped under mysterious situations by the Gobblers.
The events in film look classic but are not fully explained. Weitz has put a little depth in the plot.
The film has highlighted adventurous aspects without giving any emphasis on religious. The script of the film has carved out the fantasy adventure from the much richer source.
Music by Alexander Desplat and cinematography by Henry Braham has made out an outstanding experience.
‘The Golden Compass’ is a big budget movie that wonderfully creates a magical world.
