Singapore court confirms life sentence for Indonesian maid

Singapore court Singapore - The Singapore High Court confirmed on Thursday a life imprisonment for an Indonesian maid who killed her employer's 75-year-old mother in 2005, media reports said.

The maid, who was identified as Barokah, 29, pushed Wee Keng Wah from their ninth-floor flat after the elderly woman scolded her for sneaking out to meet a man. In 2007, the maid was sentenced to life imprisonment and appealed.

However, a re-hearing into the case did not change the judge's mind, the online edition of the Straits Times newspaper reported. The second hearing was ordered to evaluate if the life sentence was appropriate.

Edmund Peter Anthony had taken the 27-year-old Thai woman home and had sex with her on October 15, 2007, the online edition of the Straits Times newspaper reported. Before he went to the bathroom, he tied her hands and ankles with neckties.

Road rage case set for climax

A fast track court in the city is likely to pass its judgment on a two decade old road rage death case on March 3.

The accused in the case is Ashok Fernandez, son of former IAS officer and historian Praxie Fernandez. The case has been dragging on for the past two decades.

The First Fast Track Sessions Court judge Justice Savithri Vinayaka, who heard the case, has posted the judgment for March 3.

According to the prosecution, on January 11, 1990, Ashok, owner of a leading photo printing unit, allegedly shot at two motorcycle riders, Murali and his friend. While Murali died, his friend escaped with injuries.

Chitralekha Urs murder case trial gains momentum

Two important witnesses, a photographer and videographer, deposed before the First Fast Track Sessions Court in Chitralekha Urs murder case on Wednesday.

Videographer Syed Amin (sub-inspector) and photographer Gopal Shetty were the witnesses. The third phase of the trail had to be adjourned by a day on Tuesday, owing to the absence of three witnesses. The video evidence of the finding of Chitralekha's body was also produced before Justice Savithri Vinayaka. Chitralekha's body was found at Shirdi Ghat in March 2004, two months after she had disappeared from Bangalore.

Congress corporator carries a gun inside BMC house

Security continues to be lax at the BMC headquarters near CST, despite experts warning that it is a soft target for terror attacks.

On Wednesday, Congress corporator Aziz Abdul Barudgar allegedly managed to carry a gun inside the corporation house. The corporator from Santa Cruz was neither stopped nor questioned by security officials posted at the entry of the headquarters. Even the guards posted outside the corporation house on the first floor of the building did not stop him.

BMC rules disallow carrying a weapon inside the civic headquarters building without permission from senior authorities.

Two held for abusing judge

In a case of road rage, two city-based scooterists allegedly abused and threatened an Ahmednagar-based judge near Nilayam theatre recently.

The Dattawadi police have arrested the duo, who were later released on bail by a city court.

Police inspector Ashok Kshirsagar told DNA that a complaint was lodged by judicial magistrate (first class) Ajay Ashok Bhatewara (28) of Ahmednagar.

According to the police, the judge and his wife were heading towards Ganesh Kala Krida Manch at Swargate from Mhatre Bridge near Nal Stop for a programme.

Bhatewara was driving the car. After reaching Lal Bahadur Shastri Road, the couple reached the chowk near Nilayam theatre.
