Tycoons’ gas-guzzlers blamed for toxic pollution in London

London, Aug. 11 : Global warming, it seems, is not a matter of concern for the filthy rich, at least as far as the British capital, London, goes.

An investigation undertaken by The Sun recently found cars of at least 50 tycoons being driven around the Harrods shopping block by their chauffeurs for hours, spewing gas fumes.

Yellow lines restrict the streets around the London store, but there are metered parking spaces nearby for just three pounds an hour.

In the worst case witnessed on Saturday, a 150,000-pound Bentley Continental GT spent four hours going around as its two women passengers shopped.

Humans to be blamed for climate change, says US body

Climate ChangeLondon, Aug 9 : Human activity is indeed responsible for the rapid warming of the 20th century, says a new report issued by the US Climate Change Science Program.

The report concluded that computer models do effectively simulate climate.

The report is the 10th of 21 due to be issued by the body, which the skeptical George Bush administration set up late in 2002 to review the validity of climate-change science before making policy decisions.

At the time, environmentalists accused the administration of using the programme as a way to drag its feet on the issue.

China’s thickening smogs reduces methane emissions

London, August 8 : A new research has suggested that the fallout from Chinese industrial pollution could actually be reducing the country’s contribution to climate change from at least one greenhouse gas – methane.

According to a report in New Scientist, the research, conducted by a British team, added sulphate to laboratory rice paddies in an effort to mimic the effect of acid rain on Asia’s most important food crop.

“This equivalent of typical acid rain reduced methane emissions from flooded paddies by up to 25 per cent,” said Vincent Gauci of the Open University in Milton Keynes in the UK.

Mountain glaciers in Peru are receding rapidly due to global warming

Washington, July 30 : Satellite images have revealed that mountain glaciers in Peru are receding rapidly due to global warming, with 26 per cent of their surface area lost in the last 33 years.

According to a report in ENN (Environmental News Network), the reduction is equivalent to 188 square kilometres of the Cordillera Blanca, the highest tropical mountain chain in the world.

The mountain range is home to more than seven hundreds glaciers, with the glacier Huascaran declared a world heritage site by UNESCO.

Older adults can play significant role in protecting environment

Washington, July 23 : Retired older adults can play a significant role in environmental conservation by volunteering for programs run by various environmental organizations.

For elderly willing to work for community after retirement, volunteerism provides opportunities for social integration

The programs of environmental organizations routinely bring together people of different generations. Many of these involve healthy physical activity, such as the testing of rivers or clean up of natural areas, for example.

"Citizen involvement on a large scale is needed to address pressing issues of environmental conservation and sustainability," said authors Karl Pillemer, PhD, and Linda P. Wagenet, PhD, of Cornell University.

Global warming will allow several ‘pests’ to invade vulnerable Australian ecosystems
