Pakistan calls for international action to stop violence in Kashmir Islamabad  - Pakistan on Wednesday urged the international community to press New Delhi for "restrain" in its administered part of disputed Kashmir valley, where 20 people were killed by Indian police early this week during protests.

"We are deeply concerned over the deteriorating situation in Indian Occupied Kashmir which is resulting in loss of life and property of the Kashmiri people and violation of their human rights," Foreign Ministry spokesman Mohammed Sadiq ministry told reporters in the weekly media briefing.

Cambodia firm on temple dispute, soldiers to receive private aid Phnom Penh  - Cambodian journalists Wednesday announced they would answer a call for aid from soldiers stationed at a remote northern temple complex and travel there to distribute supplies.

A group of journalists including the privately owned Cambodian Television Network said they would visit the Ta Moan temples in the north of the country soon to deliver food and other essentials to troops near the site that is disputed by Thailand.

Pakistan to free 35 Indian prisonersIslamabad  - Pakistan on Wednesday announced plans to release 35 Indian prisoners later this week when New Delhi celebrates 61 years of independence from British rule.

The measure is a goodwill gesture and part of Pakistan's strategy to improve relations with India, Interior Minister Rehman Malik said in a statement.

The group includes 34 fishermen seized by Pakistan's Maritime Security Agency as they entered Pakistani waters, possibly in search of a bigger catch, and one civilian, who has completed his prison term for illegally entering and staying in the country.

Romanian parliament votes down bills to prosecute former ministersBucharest  - The Romanian parliament, meeting in special session, voted Wednesday against prosecuting former premier Adrian Nastase and former transportation minister Miron Mitrea.

A bill to seek prosecution of Nastase gained only 120 votes, far short of the necessary two-thirds majority of 218 votes, while 150 deputies voted against the bill.

In Mitrea's case, 160 deputies supported a bill for prosecution, also short of the two-thirds needed, as to 107 voting against it.

Iraqi VP blames parliament blocs for hampering elections law vote Baghdad  - Iraqi Vice President Tareq al-Hashemi Tuesday regretted not reaching an agreement on the provincial elections law and criticized parliamentary blocs for hampering the vote on the law.

"Parliamentary blocs should show some flexibility and try to compromise to reach an agreement," al-Hashemi told the Voices of Iraq (VOI) news agency.

Former Austrian chancellor Sinowatz diesVienna  - Fred Sinowatz, whose time as Austrian chancellor from 1983 to 1986 was overshadowed by several crises, died at the age of 79 on Monday, Chancellor Alfred Gusenbauer said in a statement.

Sinowatz was head of government when Kurt Waldheim was elected as Austrian president in 1986. As head of the social democratic party at that time, Sinowatz was involved in the campaign against Waldheim, who had kept silent about his past in the German Wehrmacht during World War Two.
