The roar of the man-eating tigress roaming about the jungles of Faizabad has been silenced by the bullets of an ace shooter. But the controversy surrounding the felling of the feline is likely to echo for a long time.

The two-and-a-half-year-old tigress had strayed from the Pilibhit jungles in central UP some time in November. It had travelled over 300 km, crossing half-a-dozen districts, and killed four people. The cat was shot down by Nawab Shafat Ali Khan of Hyderabad on Tuesday evening.

Relatives of those missing since 2002 riots will get Rs5 lakh as compensation

The families of people who went missing in the 2002 post-Godhra riots can finally hope to receive compensation for their losses. The state government will now declare those missing since riots across the state dead, allowing their families to receive the amount of Rs1.5 lakh announced as compensation by the state government and an additional Rs3.5 lakh from the central government.

Four of the seven Pakistanis who had captured MV Kuber and killed four Indian sailors on board the vessel have been identified, the police said. Mursheed, Aakib, Usman and Hakim Saab were among the 17 Lashkar-e-Tayiba (LeT) operatives who set sail for Mumbai from Karachi in the LeT-owned trawler, Al-Husaini, in mid-November last year

On November 23 afternoon, the four, along with three others, captured MV Kuber in the Indian territorial waters near Jakhau. They then shifted four of the five sailors on the Indian vessel to Al-Husaini and left for Pakistan, police said.

The incident took place in front of Juna Wadaj police chowki

One killed and two, including a five-year-old boy, sustained serious injuries after a speeding AMTS bus rammed into them near Juna Wadaj police chowki on Wednesday morning.

The deceased has been identified as Sonu Suryavanshi, 18, a resident of Hanuman ni Chali, Juna Wadaj. Suryavanshi along with the two injured, Ankit Marwadi, a minor and Virendra Mishra, autorishshaw driver, were rushed to the VS hospital. While Suryavanshi succumbed to her injuries, Marwadi's condition is reported to be critical.

The incident took place at around 10 am when a 40/3 AMTS bus plying between Gayatri Mandir and Bhoot Bhawani Mandir hit an auto-rickshaw near Juna Wadaj police chowki.

On Wednesday afternoon, 32-year-old Surekha Shekhar Pawar, a Kurla resident, consumed poison inside the family court in Bandra (East). She was rushed to Bhabha Hospital.

The Bandra-Kurla Complex (BKC) police have registered a case of attempting suicide and creating obstacle in functioning of the court against Pawar.

"We haven't taken her statement since she is unconscious. We have, however, spoken to her brother," said R Parera, senior inspector. He added that Pawar had filed a dowry and harassment case against her husband Shekhar in 2007. "Her brother Dhanaji Nikam said that she was seeking some confidential documents from the court since four months and was depressed because of the delay."

In the presence of a large gathering of dignitaries and local citizens, Union Minister of State for External Affairs & Information & Broadcasting Anand Sharma laid the foundation stone of the state’s first Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) at Mandi. The town of Mandi is known for its temples.

While speaking on this occasion, Anand Sharma said, “The central government last year decided to increase the number of IITs in the country to 15 from the existing seven. Six (IITs) started functioning last year and this (IIT-Mandi) and IIT-Indore would start admission process from this year.”
