French EU lawmaker Cohn-Bendit wants to "get rid of" Barroso

Octogenarian mistakes fireman for thief and shoots him dead Paris- European law-maker Daniel Cohn-Bendit, whose Europe Ecologie coalition scored a stunning success in Sunday's EU election in France, was quoted Tuesday as saying he wants to "get rid of" EU Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso.

"It's not only that he is a liberal (economically), but he is incapable of holding to a position," Cohn-Bendit said in an interview published in the daily Liberation.

The veteran Green Party politician accused Barroso - who said Tuesday that he was standing for another five-year term - of flip-flopping on important issues, such as financial regulation and the environment.

"(French President Nicolas) Sarkozy makes a big speech at the (EU) Parliament: 'Moralize capitalism. We must regulate.' Barroso adds to this: 'We must regulate.' It's perfect. Everyone has tears in his eyes," Cohn-Bendit said.

"But two hours later a European commissioner says, 'Oh, no, the only way to emerge from the (economic) crisis is to deregulate.' And what does Barroso say? Nothing. It's just not possible to have a Commission president like that in a difficult situation."

Cohn-Bendit said he would try to cobble together of majority against Barroso. "It would send a strong political signal," he said. "I don't know if we will succeed, but we must try."

Cohn-Bendit's Europe Ecologie party shocked French pundits and politicians on Sunday by receiving 16.28 per cent of the vote, only a fraction less than the mainstream Socialists drew.(dpa)
