Former Orissa DGP B B Mohanty's bail plea rejected
Jaipur, Jan 10: A Jaipur court today rejected the bail plea of former Orissa DGP B B Mohanty, who has been accused of helping his son Bitti Mohanty to jump parole in a rape case.
The additional chief judicial magistrate (ACJM) Rajendra Kumar Bansal remanded Mohanty to judicial custody.
Mohanty would be lodged in the Central Jail, Jaipur.
Earlier today, Mohanty, who had gone into hiding and had been evading Rajasthan police for the past several months, surrendered in a local court.
Mohanty had earlier indicated that he would surrender before the court in two weeks time.
Bitti, who is still on run, was found guilty of raping a German researcher on March 20, 2006.
He was given parole from November 20 to December 4, reportedly on his father's application on the grounds of his mother's illness, and has been absconding since then.
Mohanty, however, has denied that he filed any application for his son's parole.
The Rajasthan Police has charged him under Section 120B and 130 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) for conspiracy to help a criminal escape from lawful custody. He is also charged under IPC 216 for harbouring an offender who has escaped from custody.
Bitti was sentenced to seven years of rigorous imprisonment and a fine of Rs 10,000 by a fast-track court in Alwar, Rajasthan. (ANI)
