Forget benefits, Standing Desks have Demerits: Study

Many studies in the past have linked sitting for long periods to serious health complication. Still, a number of Americans prefer a job where they can sit for many hours. Some people, who know the consequence of too much sitting, stand for a few minutes to decrease the risk, but a new study suggests that even standing desks do not make a notable difference.

Some previous studies suggested that employees who spend too much time sitting could be at increased risk of heart failure. They also warned that these people may be obese, or could have disabilities in future.

Many people think standing, instead of sitting at their desk, could eliminate the risk of developing serious health complications in future. However, the new study led Johns Hopkins University researchers found that standing at a desk isn’t a solution as there is a very little change in health risks.

For the study, the researchers considered about 20 past researches that examined employees who preferred standing at their desk. They found that standing at desk or treadmill desks hardly made a difference.

“What we actually found is that most of it is, very much, just fashionable and not proven good for your health. Previous studies on the matter were poorly designed or way too small to really determine any benefits”, said Dr. Jos Verbeek, a researcher from Johns Hopkins University and lead author of the study. According to Verbeek, some past studies were with conflicting information on standing at desk.

The new study found no evidence showing that standing at desk is better than sitting. Verbeek said that even standing for about hours do not make any difference. In fact, Standing can actually be bad for your health as it may lead to problems in knees and feet, he added.
