Sydney - More than 100 volunteer firefighters and seven water-bombing aircraft were Tuesday battling a forest fire that has claimed two houses near Port Lincoln on South Australia's Eyre Peninsula.

The flames, fuelled by temperatures of 43 degrees Celsius and 50-kilometre-an-hour winds, caused Country Fire Service spokesman Brenton Eden to warn that conditions would worsen.

"The predicted wind change of a wind to the west and then the south will drive, has the potential to drive that fire closer to Port Lincoln," he told national broadcaster ABC. "So we would be advising all residents in that area and in that immediate vicinity to take extreme caution as we commit more and more resources to this fire." (dpa)
