First Baby Born through New In-Vitro Fertilization Treatment In Toronto

A recently born baby in Toronto is the world’s first baby to be conceived with a new in-vitro fertilization treatment for parents who have found no luck with IVF in past.

Zain Rajani was born four weeks ago to parents Natasha and Omar. The couple has spent nearly four years trying for a pregnancy but their efforts failed because as per doctors Natasha’s eggs were of poor quality.

Her fertility specialist, Dr. Marjorie Dixon, of First Steps Fertility, suggested a new IVF treatment that involves using a mother’s immature egg cells, found in the protective lining of the ovaries, to give an energy boost to existing eggs.

Only a single cycle of the treatment, known as Augment, worked for the couple. Natasha, 34, underwent the procedure in last May and had an embryo successfully transferred in August.

Natasha told the Star on Thursday that she thought it would be impossible for her to conceive. She said she never thought it would really happen for them.

The treatment is developed by biotech firm OvaScience of Cambridge, Mass. The experts during the treatment use the energy-producing mitochondria from immature egg cells to supplement existing mitochondria in existing eggs.

Dr. Dixon, who is also an assistant professor of reproductive endocrinology and infertility at the University of Toronto, said the new procedure is potentially revolutionary in the world of assistive reproduction.

Natasha and Omar tried traditional IVF. They even tried fertility drugs and intrauterine insemination, but faced miscarriage.

Natasha, who works in strategic sourcing for a drugstore retailer, said it was a matter of wanting a baby so badly that they were trying everything they came across.

She received the treatment at Toronto’s TCART Fertility Partners, a private clinic and the only facility in North America currently offering the new in-vitro fertilization treatment.
