Filipino workers to rally against "racist" journalist

Filipino workers to rally against "racist" journalist Hong Kong  - Filipino migrant workers are planning to protest against Hong Kong journalist Chip Tsao who wrote a satirical article describing the Philippines as a "nation of servants," a migrants group said Wednesday.

Dolores Balladares, the chairwoman of the United Filipinos in Hong Kong, accused Tsao of being insincere even though the writer apologized several times and said he never intended to cause offence.

She said the protest would take place on Sunday.

The article, entitled War at Home which appeared in the free weekly HK Magazine on March 27, questioned Manila's claims to the disputed Spratly Islands whose sovereignty is also claimed by China.

Tsao said that with more than 130,000 Filipina maids working in mainly Chinese households in Hong Kong, "as a nation of servants, you don't flex your muscles at your master, from whom you earn most of your bread and butter."

Tsao's comments caused a firestorm of protest with the Philippine government banning the writer from visiting the country. Philippine Deputy Consul General in Hong Kong Kira Danganan Azucena said Tsao had gone too far.

The writer also had to face angry comments on internet blogs, several of them threatening violence against Tsao. (dpa)
