Ferrari fights for customers with new baby GT
Maranello, Italy - Ferrari has announced a new entry-level supercar, the California drophead, which is designed to attract new customers to the Italian marque.
The front-engined V8 with its Pininfarina-styled aluminium bodywork and a folding metal hardtop is every inch a Ferrari but the car is less hardcore than its bigger brothers, making it easier to drive.
"The Ferrari California is aimed at owners who desire a car which embodies everything the Prancing Horse represents in terms of sporty design and innovation, but also seek a car with greater versatility than ever," said a statement from Ferrari in Maranello.
The baby GT slots in the range below the 599 Barchetta and features the usual Ferrari hallmarks such as powerful 4.3 litre motor along with familiar styling cues such as swept-back headlights and an "egg-crate" grille.
Performance is on par with the car's stunning looks, with acceleration from zero to 100 kilometres an hour in "under four seconds," according to the manufacturers. Top speed is around 300 km/h and although the California is no eco-mobile, carbon dioxide emissions are respectable for its class at 310 g/km.
Carbon brakes produce impressive stopping power while the dual- clutch transmission, a first for Ferrari, is designed to make the California's seven-speed gear change even slicker. Multi-link rear suspension should ensure a smoother ride too.
The California is to go on sale after making its public debut at the Paris Show this September. (dpa)
